What does "cold-pressed" mean?

A cold-pressed oil is extracted by pressing the seed or nut mechanically, the traditional ghani (chekku) way, without chemical solvents and without the high-heat refining, bleaching and deodorising that most supermarket oils go through. That is why a cold-pressed groundnut oil smells of peanuts and a sesame oil tastes nutty. Nothing has been stripped out to make the oil neutral. Cold-pressed oils can look slightly cloudy and may settle a little at the bottom of the bottle. This is normal for unrefined oil.

Which oil should you use for what?

Traditional ghee

Our Cow Ghee and A2 Ghee are bilona ghee: milk from grass-fed cows is set into curd, churned into butter and slowly simmered, for the rich aroma that makes dal, rice and sweets taste like home. The A2 ghee is made only from desi cow milk. Coconut Ghee is a dairy-free alternative for vegan cooking.

Frequently asked questions

Can I cook and fry with cold-pressed oil?

Yes. Groundnut, sesame, mustard, coconut and sunflower oils are all traditional Indian cooking oils. For deep-frying, groundnut oil is the most common choice. Flaxseed oil should not be heated; use it raw.

Why does the oil look cloudy or have sediment?

Unrefined oil keeps fine natural particles from the seed. It can turn cloudy in cool weather and settle over time. That is a sign it has not been refined. Just shake the bottle gently.

How should I store cold-pressed oil?

Keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dark place, away from the stove and direct sunlight, and use it within the best-before date on the pack. Smaller bottles of flaxseed oil are best kept in the fridge once opened.

Are these oils returnable?

Oils and ghee are perishable, so they can't be returned once opened. If a bottle arrives damaged or leaking, we will replace it. See our refund policy.
