Dhatu Organics Grey Sea Salt is moist, coarse, unrefined sea salt, hand-harvested from traditional clay-lined salt pans in South India. It has a soft grey colour and a rich, briny taste, in the same style as sel gris or Celtic salt. It has no anti-caking agents or additives, and is good as a finishing salt, for seasoning, and for pickles and fermenting.
What is grey sea salt?
Grey sea salt is sea salt that is raked by hand from clay-lined salt pans and not washed or refined afterwards, so it keeps a little natural moisture and some of the sea's minerals, which give it its grey colour. Because the crystals are moist and coarse, it tastes slightly less salty by weight than dry table salt.
| Grey sea salt | Table salt | |
|---|---|---|
| Processing | Unrefined, unwashed | Refined, often with anti-caking agents |
| Texture | Moist, coarse crystals | Dry, fine grains |
| Iodine | Not iodised | Usually iodised |
| Taste | Briny and mineral | Sharp, salty |
How to use grey sea salt
- Finishing salt: crush and sprinkle over salads, grilled vegetables, eggs, paneer or fish just before serving.
- Seasoning: use in cooking like any salt; grind it finer in a mortar or salt grinder.
- Pickles and fermenting: with no additives, it suits lacto-fermented vegetables and pickles.
Frequently asked questions
Is this Celtic salt?
"Celtic salt" is the name for grey sea salt traditionally harvested on the coast of Brittany, France. Ours is a South Indian grey sea salt, hand-harvested from clay-lined salt pans in much the same traditional way, which makes it the closest Indian equivalent to Celtic salt.
Why is my grey salt damp?
Grey sea salt naturally keeps a little moisture because it is not dried or refined. Store it airtight; if it clumps, just break it up.
Is grey sea salt healthier than table salt?
It keeps small amounts of minerals such as magnesium, but it is still mostly sodium chloride, like any salt. It is not iodised, so use it alongside iodised salt in everyday cooking, and use it sparingly if you have been told to reduce salt.
