Dhatu Organic Red Poha — Iron-Rich Beaten Rice from Whole Red Rice
Poha — beaten or flattened rice — is one of India's most beloved breakfast ingredients: quick to cook, light on the stomach, and deeply satisfying. Dhatu's Organic Red Poha takes this ancient staple to a new nutritional level by making it from whole unpolished red rice rather than the white polished rice used in conventional poha. The result is a reddish-pink poha that carries the iron, antioxidants and fibre of the complete red rice grain.
Why red poha over white poha? Conventional white poha is made from polished white rice — essentially refined starch with minimal nutritional value. Red poha, made from unpolished red rice, retains the iron-rich bran layer that makes red rice nutritionally superior. The natural anthocyanin pigments in the bran also make red poha one of the few breakfast foods with genuine antioxidant activity.
What Makes Dhatu Red Poha Different
- Single ingredient: Organic Red Rice (Flattened)
- Made from whole unpolished red rice — bran layer intact
- Naturally rich in iron — red rice's bran contains non-haem iron; excellent for vegetarians and vegans managing iron intake
- Anthocyanin antioxidants from the red bran
- Naturally gluten-free — safe for coeliac conditions
- Easier to digest than whole red rice — the flattening process partially breaks down the grain structure
- Certified organic — free from pesticides and synthetic chemicals
- Cooks in under 5 minutes — no soaking required
Nutritional Advantages Over White Poha
White poha, the most common variety sold in India, provides roughly 1mg of iron per 100g. Red poha provides over 2.5mg — more than double — along with additional magnesium, zinc and the antioxidant activity of anthocyanins. For vegetarians, who are statistically more iron-deficient than the general population, this difference is clinically significant.
How to Cook
Basic preparation: Rinse red poha in water for 30–60 seconds — just until softened. Drain thoroughly. It should be moist but not wet. The reddish-pink colour will intensify slightly when wet — this is normal and expected.
Classic Red Poha Recipe: Heat 2 tbsp oil, add mustard seeds, curry leaves and green chilli. Add chopped onion and cook until soft. Add soaked red poha, salt, turmeric and lemon juice. Toss well and cook for 2–3 minutes. Garnish with coriander and grated coconut. The red poha holds its texture better than white poha and doesn't become mushy.
Other uses: Chivda (spiced poha snack) · Poha upma · Poha ladoo · Overnight poha soaked in curd (probiotic breakfast) · Poha dosa batter
