Dhatu Organics Lacto-Fermented Lemon Pickle is made the traditional way: whole lemons, peel and all, packed with salt and spices and left to ferment slowly. There is no oil, no vinegar and no preservatives. Over the weeks the rind softens and the flavour deepens into a sharp, tangy, slightly bitter pickle that lifts curd rice, dal-rice and rotis.
Ingredients
Whole lemons, sea salt, organic turmeric powder, red chilli, cumin seeds and fenugreek seeds.
No oil · No vinegar · No preservatives · No artificial colour · Vegan
What is a lacto-fermented pickle?
Before oil and vinegar became standard, many Indian pickles were preserved with salt, spices and time. Salt draws out the lemon's juices, and natural fermentation gives the pickle its tangy depth. Because the whole lemon is used, you get the fragrance of the peel as well as the juice.
How to enjoy it
- A small spoonful alongside curd rice, dal-rice or khichdi
- Chopped fine into raita or salads
- With rotis, parathas and millet dosas
Good to know
Like all traditional pickles, it is high in salt (about 2.5g sodium per 100g), so a little goes a long way. If you are watching your salt intake or have acid reflux, enjoy it in small amounts with food.
Storage
Always use a clean, dry spoon, keep the lid tightly closed, and refrigerate after opening. Pickles are perishable and can't be returned once opened; damaged or incorrect jars are replaced (see our refund policy).
