Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have this malt every day?

Yes. 1–2 servings daily is ideal for most adults. Its balanced macro profile makes it an excellent breakfast replacement or mid-meal snack, particularly for those managing weight or blood sugar levels.

Is this safe for diabetics?

Millets have a significantly lower glycaemic index compared to rice or wheat. The sprouting process further lowers the starch load. We recommend consulting your physician for personalised guidance, but many of our customers with Type 2 diabetes consume this regularly.

Can children under 1 year have this?

We recommend introducing this malt to infants after 8 months of age in small, diluted quantities. Always consult a paediatrician before introducing any new food to infants under 12 months.

Does it contain any allergens?

This product is gluten-free and dairy-free. It is processed in a facility that also handles nuts and seeds — please check with us if you have a severe nut allergy.

What is the difference between malt and flour?

Malt is made from sprouted grains that are dried and lightly roasted before milling. This roasting step creates a subtle toasty flavour and also improves shelf life. Flour skips the sprouting and roasting steps. Malt dissolves more easily in liquids and has a more complex, slightly sweet taste.

Can I use this to make rotis or baked goods?

Absolutely. Replace up to 30% of your regular flour with this malt in chapati dough, pancake batter, or muffin recipes. Going beyond 30% may affect texture since malt lacks gluten structure.

How should I store it?

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Reseal the pouch tightly after each use. Best consumed within 6 months of opening; shelf life is 12 months from the date of manufacture when stored correctly.

Is this product certified organic?

Yes. All Dhatu millet products carry NPOP (National Programme for Organic Production) certification. Certification documents are available on request.

What is sprouted multi millet malt?

Sprouted multi millet malt is a blend of several whole millets — including ragi, jowar, bajra, foxtail, and little millet — that are sprouted (germinated), gently dried, and then milled into a fine flour. Sprouting activates beneficial enzymes, reduces antinutrients like phytic acid by up to 50%, and makes the flour easier to digest. The result is a nutrient-dense, mildly sweet base that dissolves readily in hot or warm liquid.

How is millet malt different from regular millet flour?

Regular millet flour is simply dried and milled grain. Malt flour goes one step further — the grain is sprouted before milling. Sprouting converts complex starches into simpler sugars (giving the mild malt flavour), degrades phytic acid (which blocks iron and zinc absorption), and increases the bioavailability of calcium, B-vitamins, and protein. The net result is a lighter, more digestible flour with significantly higher nutrient uptake compared to unsprouted flour.

Can babies eat sprouted millet malt?

Yes — sprouted millet malt is traditionally used as a weaning food across South India and Maharashtra. From around 6 months of age, a thin gruel made from sprouted malt can be introduced as a first solid. The sprouting process makes it easier on an infant's developing digestive system. Always consult your paediatrician before introducing any new food to a baby, and start with a very dilute preparation.

Is this millet malt suitable for diabetics?

Millets have a lower glycaemic index (GI) than refined wheat or rice. Sprouting further reduces the GI by partially converting starches to simpler forms that release energy more gradually. Our multi millet malt contains ragi (finger millet), which is well-documented for its role in blood sugar management. While it is suitable as part of a balanced diabetic diet, portion size matters — consult your doctor or dietitian for personalised guidance.

Is sprouted multi millet malt gluten-free?

All the millets in this blend — ragi, jowar, bajra, foxtail, little millet — are naturally gluten-free. Our facility handles only certified organic grains. However, if you have coeliac disease or severe gluten sensitivity, please note that cross-contamination risk from shared equipment cannot be fully ruled out, and you should assess suitability based on your sensitivity level.

How do I use sprouted multi millet malt?

The most common uses are: (1) Malt drink — mix 2–3 tbsp in warm milk or water, sweeten lightly with jaggery; (2) Porridge (kanji) — cook with water or milk to a smooth porridge, seasoned with salt or jaggery; (3) Baby food — prepare a thin gruel with warm water; (4) Baking — blend up to 30% into wheat or rice flour doughs for added nutrition; (5) Smoothies — add 1 tbsp to a fruit smoothie for a fibre and protein boost.

How should I store the malt, and what is the shelf life?

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, preferably in an airtight container after opening. Shelf life is 6–9 months from the date of manufacture when unopened. Once opened, consume within 45–60 days for best flavour and freshness. Do not refrigerate unless your kitchen is very humid, as condensation can cause clumping.
