Dhatu Organic Sonamasoori White Rice — South India's Everyday Heritage Rice

Sonamasoori is the heartbeat of South Indian cooking. This medium-grain, lightweight, aromatic variety — grown primarily in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka — has fed millions of South Indian families for generations. Its name translates to "Golden Ivy" in Telugu (Sona = gold, Masoori = a place name), and it lives up to its lyrical name: light, aromatic, perfectly textured and versatile enough to anchor every meal from everyday rice and sambar to festive biryani.

Dhatu's Sonamasoori is certified organic — grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers — and packed at harvest freshness to deliver the mild natural fragrance and signature soft, non-sticky texture that makes this variety irreplaceable in South Indian kitchens.

Why Sonamasoori is Different from Other White Rices

  • Single ingredient: Organic White Sonamasoori Rice
  • Medium grain, low starch — cooks light and separate, not clumpy or sticky
  • Lower calorie density than standard white rice — each grain is lighter with less starch per grain
  • Mild natural fragrance — pleasant but understated, allowing accompanying dishes to shine
  • Ideal texture for South Indian meals — absorbs sambar and rasam beautifully without disintegrating
  • Certified organic — NPOP certified
  • No polishing agents, no preservatives, no chemical treatment
  • Naturally gluten-free

The Lightweight Advantage

Sonamasoori is sometimes called "diet rice" in South India — not because it is a diet food, but because its grain structure contains less starch per unit than short-grain white rice varieties. This means a standard serving feels lighter on the stomach and has a lower glycaemic impact than equivalent amounts of sticky, starchy white rice varieties like Ponni or sona.

How to Cook

Stovetop: Rinse 2–3 times. Use 1:2 rice:water ratio. Bring to boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer 15–18 minutes. Rest covered for 5 minutes. Sonamasoori cooks faster than most rice varieties.

Pressure cooker (most common in South Indian homes): 1 cup rice + 2 cups water, cook for 3 whistles on medium heat. Natural pressure release.

Rice cooker: Standard white rice setting, 1:2 ratio.

Ideal Pairings

Sambar and rasam · Coconut, tomato and drumstick curries · Curd rice (the perfect vehicle for this variety) · Puliyogare (tamarind rice) · Lemon rice · Bisibelabath · Khichdi · Everyday dal and ghee
