Horsegram (Kulthi in Karnataka, Hurali in Tamil Nadu, Kollu in Kerala) is one of India's oldest cultivated pulses — drought-resistant, traditionally rain-fed, and largely grown without synthetic inputs. It has one of the highest protein and calcium concentrations among Indian pulses and is a staple in South Indian rural kitchens. Dhatu Organics sources Horsegram from NPOP-certified farms in Karnataka, delivering it whole and unpolished.

In the Kitchen

  • Horsegram Rasam (Kollu Rasam) — Traditional South Indian thin soup made from horsegram broth with tamarind, pepper, and tomato; a winter staple in Tamil Nadu
  • Kulthi Dal — Pressure-cooked with onion, garlic, dried red chillies, and a tempering of mustard and asafoetida
  • Hurali Kosambi / Saaru — Karnataka-style curry with coconut and jaggery
  • Sprouted Horsegram Salad — Soak 12 hrs, sprout 48–60 hrs; traditionally eaten as a morning meal
  • Roasted Horsegram Chutney Powder — Dry-roasted and ground with dried chilli, garlic, and salt for a condiment

Horsegram has a hard seed coat — soak for 12 hours minimum and pressure-cook for 5–6 whistles. The cooking water (broth) is nutritious and traditionally consumed separately as a warm broth before meals.
