Dhatu Organic White Basmati Rice — Aged, Aromatic & Certified Organic
There is Basmati, and then there is authentic Basmati. Dhatu's Organic White Basmati is sourced from the traditional Basmati-growing heartland of the Indo-Gangetic plains — aged for over a year, certified organic, and delivering the legendary elongation, non-stick texture and unmistakable 2-AP fragrance that makes Basmati the world's most celebrated rice.
What makes true Basmati? Authentic Basmati has a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) — it can only be labelled Basmati if grown in specific districts of India and Pakistan. The unique terroir of the Himalayan foothills, the specific water, soil mineral profile and altitude, combined with the indigenous seed genetics, produces the 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline compound responsible for the signature popcorn-like fragrance. No other rice in the world naturally produces this aroma.
Product Highlights
- Single ingredient: Organic White Basmati Rice
- Certified organic — NPOP certified from traditional Basmati-growing regions
- Minimum 1-year aging — reduces moisture, deepens aroma, prevents stickiness
- Extra-long grain: 7.2mm+ grain length, elongates to 15mm+ when cooked
- Naturally low in fat and sodium
- Naturally gluten-free
- No added fragrance, no polishing agents, no chemical treatment
- Each grain cooks separately — never clumps or becomes sticky
Glycaemic Index & White Rice
Basmati white rice has a lower glycaemic index (~52–58) than regular white rice (~72–78). This is because Basmati's unique starch structure — with a higher proportion of amylose to amylopectin — is digested more slowly, producing a more gradual blood glucose response. It is the white rice variety of choice for people managing blood sugar, and is substantially lower GI than jasmine, sushi, or regular short-grain white rice.
How to Cook Perfect White Basmati
Wash: Rinse 3–4 times until water runs completely clear — this removes excess surface starch and prevents gummy rice. Soak: Soak for 20–30 minutes in cold water. Cook: 1:1.75 rice:water ratio (less water than brown rice as there is no bran to hydrate). Bring to a rapid boil, reduce to lowest possible heat, cover tightly and cook for exactly 12 minutes. Remove from heat, keep covered and rest for 8 minutes. Fluff with a fork — each grain should be distinct, fluffy and perfectly elongated.
Ideal For
Biryani (chicken, mutton, prawn, vegetarian) · Jeera rice and simple pulaos · Khichdi · Dal and rice · Curd rice · Steamed rice with curry · Persian-style saffron rice · Fried rice (day-old Basmati is perfect)
