What is germinated brown rice (GABA rice)?
Germinated brown rice, also called GBR or GABA rice, is whole brown rice that has been soaked until it just begins to sprout, then dried. Many people don't know that brown rice can be sprouted at all. Germination softens the grain, so it cooks more easily than regular brown rice and has a milder, slightly sweet taste and softer texture.
Why choose germinated brown rice?
- Whole grain: the bran and germ are kept, so it has more fibre, B vitamins, vitamin E and magnesium than white rice.
- Naturally contains GABA: germination increases the grain's natural GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), which is how the rice gets its name.
- Easier to cook: it cooks faster and softer than ordinary brown rice, making it a simple swap for white rice.
- Naturally gluten-free.
How to cook
Rinse once. Cook 1 cup of rice with about 2 cups of water in a pressure cooker for 2–3 whistles, or simmer covered for 25–30 minutes, then rest for 5 minutes before fluffing.
