Dhatu Activated Flaxseeds 500g — Higher Bioavailability, Better Digestibility
Flaxseeds are among the most nutrient-dense seeds in nature — rich in plant-based omega-3 fatty acids, dietary lignans and soluble fibre. Dhatu's Activated Flaxseeds take this one step further: the seeds are soaked in water and then dried at low temperature, a process that reduces phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors, activates dormant enzymes and makes the nutrients significantly more accessible to the body. The result is the same whole flaxseed — better prepared for digestion.
Nutritional Profile (per 100g)
- Single ingredient: Activated Organic Flaxseeds (Linum usitatissimum)
- ~22g Omega-3 fatty acids (ALA) — one of the richest plant-based sources of alpha-linolenic acid
- ~27g dietary fibre — both soluble and insoluble; supports healthy bowel movement and promotes satiety
- ~18g protein — a good plant-based protein contribution with a relatively complete amino acid profile
- Rich in lignans — flaxseeds contain up to 800x more plant lignans than most other foods; lignans are a type of phytoestrogen and antioxidant
- Reduced phytic acid — activation breaks down this anti-nutrient, improving mineral absorption
- Milder, nuttier flavour — the soaking process softens the seed and rounds out the raw bitterness
- Easier to digest — enzyme inhibitors are deactivated, reducing digestive discomfort
- NPOP Certified Organic — no synthetic pesticides, no additives
What Does 'Activated' Mean?
Activation is the process of soaking seeds in water for a set period and then drying them at a low temperature (below 45°C, to preserve nutrients). Soaking triggers the seed's germination response: it neutralises phytic acid (which can bind to minerals and reduce their absorption), deactivates enzyme inhibitors and begins breaking down complex starches and proteins into more digestible forms. The seed is then carefully dried so it is shelf-stable, easy to store and ready to eat or grind without further preparation.
Compared to raw whole flaxseeds — which pass largely undigested unless ground — activated flaxseeds offer improved digestibility and nutrient release, even when consumed whole.
Omega-3 & Lignans — What the Numbers Mean
Flaxseeds are the single richest plant source of ALA omega-3, providing approximately 22g per 100g — far ahead of chia seeds (~17g/100g) and walnuts (~9g/100g). ALA is an essential fatty acid that the body cannot synthesise and must obtain through diet. Flaxseeds also contain lignans — polyphenolic compounds with antioxidant properties — at concentrations up to 800 times higher than most other plant foods. Both omega-3 and lignans are associated in peer-reviewed research with general cardiovascular and cellular health markers.
How to Use Activated Flaxseeds
Eat whole: Unlike raw flaxseeds, activated flaxseeds can be eaten whole and still offer good digestibility. Add a tablespoon to yoghurt, smoothies or breakfast bowls.
Grind fresh: For maximum nutrient release, grind in a small blender or spice grinder just before use. Sprinkle ground flaxseed over oats, rice, dal or vegetables.
Baking: Replace up to 25% of flour in rotis, bread or muffins with ground flaxseed for a fibre and omega-3 boost.
Flax egg: Mix 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed with 3 tablespoons water; rest for 5 minutes. Use as a binding substitute in baking.
Raita or chutneys: Blend ground activated flaxseed into raita or chutney for a nutrient boost that is virtually tasteless.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place. Once ground, refrigerate and use within 1–2 weeks for best freshness.
About Dhatu Organics
Dhatu Organics sources certified organic flaxseeds from traditional farming communities and activates them in small batches without any heat treatment that would compromise the omega-3 content. No additives, no preservatives — single ingredient, minimally processed, as nature intended.
